I'm doing a talk and presentation at the Art Deco style and history. I need a few references have to look at my information. Do you have ideas other than Wikipedia?
Answer:
I think is the best way to start a discussion about Art Deco, Art Nouveau contrast with it. In its simplicity and modernity, it was a conscious reaction against the Art Nouveau, But in its elegance and its appeal to an affluent and elitist vision of the world, in effect, which it maintains and enhances the effects of Art Nouveau. For examples, see the work of Tiffany glass, then Lalique. A good starting point for this study, the contrast essay by Richard White House, "Art Nouveau to Art Deco." [1] Of course, Read on Wikipedia a simple, general history as in the article about Art Deco, but if I were you, I would jump at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (1925), which after all provided the names (= Art Deco Decorative Arts) and an international focus on the movement. Perhaps you read the article from a magazine about world exhibitions. [2] Here is a brief excerpt that identiftying characteristics recorded the movement: "Art nouveau had dancers called for a kind of grace in its winding lines - the grace of the vines draped, or the slow movements exotic. The Cubism of Braque, Gris and Picasso, though, heralded a new Preference for abrupt angularity. Translated in the decorative arts of furniture, clothing and architecture, this was abruptly into a smooth sleekness of line, we are now streamlined. "All that was clearly the older way of life strictly distinguished from the exposure of 1925 excluded," said Waldemar George. The new aggressive style would be modern, under his leadership of the avant-garde in the other arts in the expression of a new zeitgeist. "Finally, after many hints special artists in chronological order (and the study of the actual artist is ultimately the only way to go), check you may want to Artcyclopedia [3]. The links to some artists here is a beginning and suggest several directions as you go to probably time. I would recommend, especially Rene Lalique (Glassmaking), William Van Alen (architecture), Walter Teague (Industrial Design, cameras, such as cars, etc.), Paul Manship (sculptor) and Erte (painting). Good luck and have fun!
