Why is the camera angle in a TV baseball game always from behind the mound towards home plate?
Doesn't it make more sense to shoot the action out from behind home plate? Then we could see so many more important details--how much of a lead the 1st base runner is taking and whether he's looking to steal; where the outfielders are playing against a particular hitter; line drives and double plays happening in unbroken action; the list goes endlessly on. Isn't the point to give the home viewer the feeling of having the best seat in the house? It only makes more sense to do it like that now that HD can show us the full field of action. I can't be the only one who's thought of this. There must be a reasonable explanation why they keep doing it seemingly backwards.
Answer:
The center field view, concentrating on the pitcher, catcher, batter, and umpire is by far the best overall view for television.
Including the baserunners would require a wide-angle view, which would drastically cut down on the detail showing the center of the action - the pitcher and batter. Not everyone has high-def TV or wide screens.
Every now and then they do use the wide angle you mentioned, mainly to show viewers where the runners are and where the infielders are playing. Using that view all the time would make the majority of the game much harder to follow.
