Kitchen Sink?
I need a new sink in the kitchen. I was thinking about the new composite type. Has anybody had any experience with this type? How about scratches? Are they noisy like stainless steel.
I've seen stand alone sinks at Menards that are not steel. Maybe palstic or fiberglass.
Answer:
By composite, I'm assuming you mean something like
Corian. These are very, very good sinks, but expensive and usually can't be installed by a DIY. Also, I've yet to see a composite sink installed without the counter-top being replaced with the same material. They hold up very well, scratches can be sanded/buffed out, staining can be a bit of a problem but can be worked. If you just don't like the "noise" of stainless, get a new stainless steel sink that has a thin layer of sound absorbent (foam) sprayed on the underside, and DO NOT buy the cheapest sink. You get what you pay for. Sinks now come in so many different materials it can be difficult to choose. Check out Fine Homebuilding's Kitchen and Bath Planning Guide at http://www.taunton.com (under Homebuilding, remodeling & design/books and dvd's). There's a section specifically about sinks, pros and cons, costs, ideas, etc. For $9.00 (plus s&H) it's worth every penny. I've already sent three to clients.
